An act of humanity

At the Val-Jalbert Historic Village, heritage preservation is at the heart of our mission. With this in mind, a restoration project was recently carried out in the cemetery.

Following a rigorous expert report conducted in 2023 by the Quebec Conservation Center and after obtaining the necessary authorizations from the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications, our teams took action.

Meticulous and Specialized Procedures

In total, 22 tombstones—whose state of disrepair required urgent intervention—were carefully restored. The work consisted mainly of:

  • Lift, straighten, and mount the weakened steles on a support
  • Perform a thorough cleaning and repair the cracks
  • Remove the old mortar joints and redo them using the original techniques.

For two of the tombstones requiring more extensive restoration, transportation was arranged to the workshops of the Quebec Conservation Center, where they will be restored directly on site.

A passionate collective effort

This heritage restoration project was overseen by expert conservators. To carry out this precision work, they were able to count on the invaluable collaboration of the Historic Village’s horticulture team.

This initiative is a direct extension of the Val-Jalbert Regional Park Corporation for the preservation and promotion of our site. By caring for these stones, we ensure the enduring legacy of the history and memory of those who built Val-Jalbert.
